Victims of the economic collapse….

Well, our family has become a victim of the economic collapse. My husband has been laid off from his job of 14 years. It’s not immediate. He will be able to continue to work until December 19th and then a 5 month severance package will kick in…full pay and full benefits until May 29th. He also has a significant PTO balance that he’ll have cashed out on the 19th.

Fortunately, the hospital has a permanent position open that I’ll be able to move into. It’s only .6 FTE, but I have another .4 FTE’s from a couple of job shares that I have, so it will work out to full-time. And I’ll be eligible for medical insurance benefits.

We also have our bills in order. We don’t have car payments, our mortgage is manageable and we have a pretty good savings account. So, we’re in a far better position than a lot of people going through this.

Nevertheless, it’s a little unnerving. It feels a bit tenuous to know that one of us won’t have a job in a month and a half or so. Wish us luck.

Good luck. I’m feeling it with you, in fact, I’m in a very similar situation myself.

Best of luck. Sounds a little scary but also sounds like a lot of your ducks are in a row which is more than can be said for many of our clients. Take care of yourself!

Oh my goodness, I’m so sorry! Thank goodness you can move into a full time job and you have a savings. Still…it must be frightening. My thoughts are with you.

We have received a seres of emails from hospital administration about the economic crisis and how it might affect us – the last recession resulted in a layoff of 98% of the hospital social workers, so it’s scary, for sure. Good luck to you and your family!
